The Education Program at West Virginia University
The Benedum Collaborative Model of Teacher Education addresses the changing profession of teaching with an emphasis on greater teacher empowerment. Traditional four-year education programs throughout the country typically are not up to par with adequately addressing the issues raised by current research on the knowledge base and professional preparation needed for effective teaching. Through the Benedum Collaborative and the use of Professional Development Schools, students in the five-year teaching program have the opportunity to interact directly with children, learn about professional decisions made on issues such as curriculum design, textbook selection, instructional materials, school policies and procedures, and have an exceptional amount of practice with development functional lesson plans. The Bachelor of Arts or Science is awarded with the Multi-Disciplinary Studies Undergraduate Program in Elementary Education, and students select specializations to expand the grade levels for which they are certified to teach, including:
