Animated BookPDS stands for Professional Development School. Professional Development Schools couple the best of schooling practices with the best of professional development and prepartation programs to best enhance learning opportunities for children. West Virginia became one of the first states in the county to establish this school-university partnership through the Benedum Project in the 1980s. Professional Development Schools offer a location where public schools and universities integrate professional practice in schools with professional preparation programs in universities to enhance the quality of both establishments. The Professional Development School concept is based on three core ideas about how public schools and universities work together to benefit the profession:

  • Professional Development Schools collaborate as sites of experimentation and innovation to create "best practices".
  • Professional Development Schools work collaboratively to be "centers of inquiry" where research and development on best practice and best professional development and preparation occur.
  • Professional Development Schools are "empowered communities" where all stakeholders share in decision-making and participate in determining the learning needs and opportunities for students.

West Virginia University and the Benedum Collaborative utilize a total of 28 Professional Development Schools within 5 counties.
